Ptolemaic Period

Ptolemaic Period
(323–30 BC)
The term used by Egyptologists for the period during which Egypt was ruled by the Macedonian general Ptolemy I and his descendants. The beginning of the period varies, as Ptolemy was in charge from 323 BC, but he did not openly assume independent rule until 305 BC. Many temples from Upper Egypt erected or refurbished by the Ptolemies survive; however, the government was continued from Alexandria by the Greek ruling class, and Egyptian culture, although respected, remained secondary to the interests of the rulers.
